Shyamprasad shifts Sophocles‘ tragedy to a Keralan setting and uses the story of an aristocratic family to explore the destructive power of desire and loss.
Elektra, overly devoted to her father Abraham, hates her mother Diana for the adulterous relationship she conducts in Abraham’s absence. Oblivious of the storm raging at his home, Abraham returns from his plantation. Only hours later, he is found dead. Consumed with rage and envy, Elektra vows to avenge her father’s death. She believes Diana to have poisoned Abraham.
To win her brother Edwin as an accomplice, Elektra eventually reveals their mother’s adulterous affair to him. Edwin, who loves his mother more than anything in the world, is devastated. More deaths and vows of vengeance follow suit as the readiness to commit crimes spreads like a fatal virus. Elektra finds herself caught in a deadly storm and has to learn that everything in life comes at a price.
Using a creative, yet poetic style, Shyamprasad’s psycho-sensual drama tells an ancient story, showing how the great questions of human existence are still valid today.
